Unconventional Gas
As conventional gas resources are becoming increasingly difficult to find and produce, the production of unconventional gas is becoming much more attractive. Improved reservoir knowledge coupled with the development of increasingly advanced technologies is enabling more efficient and viable unconventional gas production. The focus nowadays is to unlock the gas closely bound in lower permeability resources. Tapping into the world’s vast unconventional gas resources is rapidly becoming prevalent - in the US for example, unconventional gas production is now the dominant source of natural gas production.
There are four main types of unconventional gas reserves available to us worldwide. Each type of reservoir poses unique challenges.
- Coalbed methane – abundant source of energy, becoming increasingly easier to produce due to improved exploration and transportation methods. Production can be expensive and technically difficult due to challenging characteristics of coal.
- Tight gas – this energy source is fast-emerging. Reservoirs demand sophisticated techniques to reduce the migration distances from the formation to the well. Formation has low permeability, requiring flow area to be deep into formation to get economical production. Stimulation and cementing technologies are predicted to significantly improve economic production.
- Shale gas – organically loaded gas shale reservoirs. The challenge to release gas from rock as solid as concrete.
- Gas hydrates – Seismic surveys predict reserves to be abundant in offshore regions and under permafrost in some arctic areas. Recovery of this resource is challenging and environmental concerns are significant.
